Reminiscing…

Seven years ago today the Senator won his party’s nomination for state Senate coming out of a heated six way primary and spirited run-off election.  I really only remember this exact date because we worked like dogs to get him across that finish line, I lost five pounds, and my precious adopted Godson was born.  All on this very day, September 17th back in 2002.
Isn’t it funny what you remember?  People from my parents generation remember where they were when Kennedy was shot or what they were doing when Elvis died.  All of my peers can recall specific details from the morning when the Twin Towers went down.
Me….  I remember elections.

And, of course this little cutie who was born seven years ago today!

He belongs to my BFF Pioneer Woman.

I remember the specific moment she called to tell me he was born. I had spent the entire morning driving to all the polling places in the Senator’s district checking on the voter turn out. Let me explain.  At your polling place, the voting machines have a number on the front that indicates how many people have cast their ballots.  Most campaigns keep track of how many potential voters there are in that precinct, and how many voted in the last election so this information can be extremely helpful.  Anyway, voter turn out is typically low in run-off elections and we were carefully monitoring our get-out-the-vote efforts.
Actually, I just needed a way to pass the time so “I” was carefully monitoring our get-out-the-vote efforts.  The Senator was on the phone actually “getting out the vote”.
I will never forget as I was driving from the north part of town out to the west part of town when PW called to tell me they had just birthed a son.  This was a BIG deal, only because they already had two precious baby girls, they lived on a ranch and her rancholicious-hard working overly loaded with testosterone husband REALLY wanted a boy. You know, to skirt child labor laws and such.  Not really…  and I keep telling her that I am officially, unofficially adopting him as my Godson.
She thinks I’m crazy.  I think he is a heart breaker.
Happy Birthday B-Man!  Come back and see us sometime real soon.

Mail

It’s summer time, the kids are enjoying their favorite activities, the Senator is working his other job and I am trying to impose some sort of structure on our carefree and happy family life.  Thank goodness it is not an election year, I repeat NOT an election year.  If it were, the Senator would be up for re-election and that would certainly change the dynamics around here.

But you would never guess this summer was a freebie based solely on the amount of political mail we have been receiving.  Numerous solicitation letters, phone calls, political newsletters, emails, twitters and political fundraisers. LOTS of political fundraisers I might add.
The Senator tells me that the deluge in mail and the significant increase in political fundraising events is due to a new law the Legislature past last year.  This legislation bans any type of political fundraising by state legislators during the legislative session.
This does explain the dramatic increase in current political activity, but I’m wondering what they were thinking when they passed this law, really?  I mean, it gives a tremendous advantage to those who have the capability to self fund their own race, not to mention those candidates running for other offices because this law only applies to the Legislature.  Hmmmmm.
Just curious about some of the stuff that goes down at the Capitol.  That’s all.

Meet two of our very favorite pastors, Mark and Jennifer Crow.

Yes, the Senator has that deer in the headlights look that our son says he gets when he is really excited to see someone.  And he was…excited to see them.

Roughly seven years ago we stumbled into their church for a Wednesday evening service after a long day on the campaign trail.  Their church is located in the heart of the Senator’s district, and on that particular Wednesday evening the parking lot was full of cars and kids and looked like it would welcome some stragglers.
Our family loves attending services at this church.  The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the message is way beyond good.  In fact, sometimes we have been given so much food for thought that the car ride home is quiet while we each, individually ponder what has been said. But you don’t have to be in the neighborhood to worship there, just go to your computer and click on www.victorychurch.tv
The Senator likes Mark’s style.  He gets it and gives it right back to you- in layman’s terms.  For me personally, I love Jennifer’s singing voice, she has the voice of an angel. Don’t even get me started on the music…awesome.
Several sessions back, Mark was kind enough to come to the Capitol to be the Pastor of the week for my Senator.  He brought another pastor from his church with him and boy am I forever grateful to her. During our last campaign she dropped everything one day to pray with me.  It was an ugly campaign and the leaders at this church lifted us up in prayer.
So you can understand why the Senator was so happy to see them recently at the Capitol.  They are special friends who have touched our lives.
Oh, and they also have five children, one of whom paged for the Senator last year down at the marble palace.  That young man is going to run for Governor one day and win. Yep, you read it here first!
