This Lady

January 13, 2012 2 comments

Today is my birthday.  I have never been one to want to celebrate getting older, although lately I have found myself celebrating life.  But, today…..

Today, I am going to celebrate this lady. My momma.

….because I entered the world weighing 10lbs and 2 ounces and she’s still nice to me!

Love you mom.  You are a a remarkable example of all things good in this world!

Life

My life this past month in photos from my new phone……….

I think this is somewhere outside of Felt, Oklahoma.  Don’t ask. But, Oklahoma is still as dry and dusty as that photo would indicate.  At least in my neck of the woods.  Doing the rain dance as we speak….

My awesome sister-in-law waiting for a table at a restaurant in D.C.  I love this girl.  My brother does too and that is a good thing cause we are keeping her in the family.

The Senator’s back side.  Let me re-phrase that….we had some families over to grill hamburgers recently and I thought the Senator was looking mighty cute and clever with his make-shift utensil holder.  I know. I’m a nerd.

My mom and I in New Mexico on a hike…before that first cup of coffee.  Seriously, someone please tell me to put on mascara!  No doubt I was responsible for scaring all wildlife away.

Yes, the quality here is far from award-winning but it was one of my first self portraits on my iPhone.  The Senator and I in our hotel lobby in D.C.  It was very late.

My next post won’t be from my phone.  It will be a picture of my desk so you can see what I have been up to….hint, it does not involve laundry….but it should.  That situation is one day away from being a threat to national security.

More Tales from the Trail…

June 5, 2010

The Senator’s fundraiser was fabulously fun. They always are – but that will never change the fact that I am apprehensive each and every time.  I suppose in my eight years of being a Senator’s wife, I have realized that when a candidate has the support of many people, these events are enjoyable.  But, when the candidate is running and not many are following…that is when they become uncomfortable…at least for me anyway.

This week, however has been full of stress.  On Monday, the Senator officially filed to run for re-election.  The first time he did this eight years ago, we went to the Capitol all dressed up with our children and a camera. Once we got there, we quickly realized that the check which accompanies the document had to be a cashiers check and that the official paper he was filing had to be notarized.  Oops.  Of course we panicked and scrambled and ran to the closest bank where these details were quickly completed.

This time around, the Senator went by himself and turned the forms in without any pomp and circumstance. No wife, no children….no camera. Meanwhile, I was at home glued to my computer, watching the screen to see who else would step up to the plate and take the Senator on….

We knew there was a lady out there on the horizon planning on challenging the Senator.  We had heard about her back in March.  However, this year as with every election cycle there are winds of change blowing through the electorate which will motivate various individuals to enter into public service.  Eight years ago the Senator had just opened his own small business and was angry at the bureaucratic red tape that impeded economic success in our state.  He had no idea who he would be running against or why, only that the incumbent had chosen to retire and the senate seat was being vacated.

This year, there is a strong anti-incumbent mood in the air………we’ll see.

Regardless, the Senator is locked and loaded and ready to continue his fight for a more prosperous future. (Just a little political rhetoric for your amusement!)

What I Did Last Summer, Part III

Late last spring and into the summer months I wrote a handful of blog posts that I never published.  I am sure I did this intentionally as we were in campaign mode and I was a little paranoid…or protective…. or tired of being in the fish bowl…. Anyway, none of it matters now that the Senator’s campaign has successfully come to a close, so I thought I would share some of my tales from the trail….
Private Apprehension
June 3, 2010
I am going to be quite frank when I say that I really detest political fundraisers.  Really.  I do not like them one bit.  They are awkward, and they are a necessity in politics.  There is no way out.  One must raise money to be a viable political candidate.  Not only does it require money to run a functioning political campaign but there are other benefits to having a fundraiser.  If you are successful, and can get individuals to contribute and support your effort, it gives you credibility as a candidate.
My Senator has street cred.  He is a fantastic fundraiser.   He knows why he got in this game and he tells his story with sincerity.  His list of supporters is LONG and we are only just getting started in this election cycle.
While I am proud of my man, I still do not like attending political fundraisers.  Not my Senator’s or anyone elses.  They are REALLY awkward.  Especially when they are not well attended.  That being said, the Senator’s seem to always be crowded and full of fun people……maybe I just don’t like him having to ask for campaign funding…..maybe I get nervous when he has to speak (story for another day) or, maybe I have reclusive tendencies…..maybe I just don’t like politics….
Regardless, I am currently full of apprehension- for when I am done writing this memo, I will be flying out the door to attend the first of many political fundraisers this election year.  Please, someone feel my pain.

What I Did Last Summer, Part II

May 13th
Recently we met a friend of ours from the City who graciously agreed to help us capture some family photos for use in the Senator’s upcoming campaign.  Having done this for two previous campaigns – the Senator’s kids knew full well what was expected of them…despite the windy and sometimes cool conditions.  Can you tell we are extremely wind blown in this shot?

Or, tired and cranky in this one…..
At this point, the Senator wanted to re-cycle some photos from the previous campaign…. which might have worked if the kids had not changed any, right?  I’ve written about campaign photos before.  It’s a process.  And, somehow I am thinking we are not quite done with this one yet…

Reflections
May 21, 2010
Yesterday, two of our friends buried their 11 month old son.  It was a beautiful, uplifting funeral of faith where the lessons this little boy imparted on those around him were noted and remembered.  An 11 month old can shed light on many things.
I do not like funerals.  However, if they were all like this one, I would make a point to attend.  I know that sounds silly, but I believe God sends us all here for a reason, and yesterday many of those reasons were duly noted.  We were all reminded to cherish life and live it with purpose and no regret.
The service took it out of me and the Senator.  Seeing that I had picked him up at the Capitol, when I took him back to work, he invited me in.  Sounds silly, but I  have not wanted to spend much time at the Marble Palace as of late….and he knows it.  I also think he enjoys having me around that crazy place. So, I acquiesced and joined him for a bit as he prepared to go back into session.  I walked onto the floor with him to check on a bill  he was about to present, sat in his office and talked to friends that were in the building and stared at the piles of paper work and correspondence that were on top of his desk.  It was a Kodak moment and of course, I did not have my camera.
As it was time to leave, I gave the Senator a big hug and kiss as I was reminded on this day how much I love him, cherish our family and how much I respect what he is doing for our great state.

Political Observation

So, the Senator’s son is home sick and watching a re-run of the Gubernatorial debate from last week.  I’m not even going to comment other than the political fever hovering over the house has matriculated.

However,  he just said that he thinks in this particular race, (for Governor in Oklahoma) that it basically boils down to ideas vs. personality….adding that he believes one candidate has the better ideas while the other has a much better personality.

I’ll let you decide………..

Candidate #1

Jari or Mary?

Will it be Jari or Mary?
If you live in Oklahoma, you know we have a dynamic and historic race for Governor taking place.  The winner will be a woman. The first ever.
We also had a gubernatorial debate last night between the two candidates.
I think it is safe to say that Oklahoma is now in touch with a softer, more feminine side.
Jari made an emotional plea to the voters, while Mary spoke passionately about the issues. Both candidates were cordial.  They even wore different shades of pink.
I have had the opportunity to get to know Mary and Jari as they have served our state in numerous capacities over the years. And, I like them both… a lot.
While they have different backgrounds, political philosophies and their own distinctive leadership styles, both are more than capable of leading our state down a positive and productive path.
On November 2nd, I think it is safe to say that Oklahoma will be the winner.

Craziness

October 13, 2010 2 comments

I was having a fun conversation yesterday with a good friend of mine about all of the political craziness on T.V. right now.  She happens to live in New Hampshire and her airways are inundated with ads from tons of candidates all across the region.

I guess that’s just how it is up there in New England.  Here in Oklahoma, we get to keep our ads all to ourselves.  And, this next one is definitely a keeper.

Enjoy!
