About The Senator's Wife

I started this blog on a whim thinking it would be fun to write about politics while my husband served in the OK State Senate. The jury's still out on that, but having a front row seat on the sideline of Oklahoma politics has been one big adventure.

Dallas

I don’t usually write live, up to the minute blog posts capturing where I am and what I am doing, but today is an exception.  Today, I am in Dallas.  Dallas, Texas… for the groundbreaking ceremony of the George W. Bush Presidential Center.

The only reason I am here is because my awesome sister in law just happened to work for the 43rd President of the United States and had an extra ticket to the big event.  (Thanks Bro for not being able to accompany her….I am really glad to be taking your place!)

Anyway, I drove down this afternoon to do a little shopping and meet up with my sister-in-law when we ran into the former First Lady at Neiman Marcus.  She was buying Jo Malone.  They love her there.  I smiled and gawked in total admiration. Then I told my sister in law she had some spinach in her teeth.

So, tonight we are getting ready to attend a dinner for all of the “Alumni” taking place at Gilly’s…. a notorious hot spot in Dallas…just think Bud and Sissy in Urban Cowboy. I had never heard of it before, but then again, I am not from Dallas and I never saw the movie Urban Cowboy. Nor have I ever ridden a mechanical bull, but the night is young!

Anyway, if you are a member of the Bush/Cheney Alumni Association – you were invited to attend this event…..and they all showed up because the hotel is really crowded…and festive….and full of really nice people who love our country.

More on this later……

What I Did Last Summer, Part II

May 13th
Recently we met a friend of ours from the City who graciously agreed to help us capture some family photos for use in the Senator’s upcoming campaign.  Having done this for two previous campaigns – the Senator’s kids knew full well what was expected of them…despite the windy and sometimes cool conditions.  Can you tell we are extremely wind blown in this shot?

Or, tired and cranky in this one…..
At this point, the Senator wanted to re-cycle some photos from the previous campaign…. which might have worked if the kids had not changed any, right?  I’ve written about campaign photos before.  It’s a process.  And, somehow I am thinking we are not quite done with this one yet…

What I Did Last Summer…

Late last spring and into the summer months I wrote a handful of blog posts that I never published.  I am sure I did this intentionally as we were in campaign mode and I was a little paranoid…or protective…. or tired of being in the fish bowl…. Anyway, none of it matters now that the Senator’s campaign has successfully come to a close, so I thought I would share…..

Reflections
May 21, 2010
Yesterday, two of our friends buried their 11 month old son.  It was a beautiful, uplifting funeral of faith where the lessons this little boy imparted on those around him were noted and remembered.  An 11 month old can shed light on many things.
I do not like funerals.  However, if they were all like this one, I would make a point to attend.  I know that sounds silly, but I believe God sends us all here for a reason, and yesterday many of those reasons were duly noted.  We were all reminded to cherish life and live it with purpose and no regret.
The service took it out of me and the Senator.  Seeing that I had picked him up at the Capitol, when I took him back to work, he invited me in.  Sounds silly, but I  have not wanted to spend much time at the Marble Palace as of late….and he knows it.  I also think he enjoys having me around that crazy place. So, I acquiesced and joined him for a bit as he prepared to go back into session.  I walked onto the floor with him to check on a bill  he was about to present, sat in his office and talked to friends that were in the building and stared at the piles of paper work and correspondence that were on top of his desk.  It was a Kodak moment and of course, I did not have my camera.
As it was time to leave, I gave the Senator a big hug and kiss as I was reminded on this day how much I love him, cherish our family and how much I respect what he is doing for our great state.
